Angle and range: shot from above, +/- 20 feet, pistol.

Bullet entry: between floating and bottom rib, front right.
Bullet disposition: lodged near lower back rib, front right near spine.

Effects of long shot; slow movement, high range of travel inside cavity, sloppy travel path, minimal distortion of bullet, uncomplicated extraction.

Immediate scope of injury:

Liver damage
Muscle tearing
Shattered rib

Complications:

Punctured lung (Pneumothorax), low and small, from inadequately controlled rib points during movement. (ETA: whups. Bleeding from mouth -- bright red, profuse -- directly after shot. Ergo, pneumothorax immediately)

Profuse bleeding
Infection.
Pleurisy from breathing constriction.

Long term effects:

Bullet: requires extraction to avoid blood poisoning. Vulnerability to infection if introduced matter, i.e. clothing, not removed with.

Fluid in lung, will clear by itself given time, vulnerability to pneumonia during healing, may be weak for +/- one year. Long term scarring probable, should not appreciably affect functioning until much later in life. Other lung functioning well.

Weakness from blood loss, will clear by itself.

Pain from rib and muscle, will clear by itself -- additional muscle loss due to infection. Long term will require exercise to clear stiffness from scar tissue. Due to high placement, low chance of hernia (whew).

Liver damage: Jaundiced appearance, will clear over time (+/- 6 mo. for yellowness). Lowered immune system, but not radically. (Livers regenerate well, function less than 1/3 impaired.)

Infection: w/o antibiotics, will clear completely as immune system recovers. Will be contained but present +/- 6-12 months. Unlikely to break out again with good care. May not break out even with poor care.

Query: Bush, OTOH, got hit rather lower. What's HE doing all bouncy?

Well, the "+/- 6-12 months" bits are consoling me for the rest of it.

::raises an enquiring eyebrow:: LKU?
